Music – For the Ceremony Here is a story. My husband and I married in 1974, in California. Surprise! We are still living happily ever after. Anyway, we accepted the offer of a relative to sing at our ceremony. A soprano, she sang, "Bless this House," a song my mother chose. Mom was happy and that added to my happiness, yet I didn’t know, nor do I remember the song! When planning your music, there are many who offer their involvement; it might be wise to do what my daughter did. She and her beloved announced early that there would be "no vocals" at their wedding ceremony or reception. Whew, no hurt feelings, their personal preference was made before any well-meaning offers were made. Traditionally music begins about thirty minutes before the ceremony and is played as the guests are seating. Often a solo is sung after the Mother of the Bride is seated. Processional music follows. Music can be a part of the lighting of the unity candle; after the vows are said, sometimes there is a song. Songs during the ceremony traditionally are limited to one or two. The recessional music chosen is usually a slightly quicker tempo. Music can be as simple as making an arrangement with the church organist. Another choice could be a guitarist, violinist or harpist. Solo instrumentals are elegant. A string quartet is romantic. Music on CD or tape during the ceremony is completely acceptable – and could be your back up plan if something unexpected happens to keep your musician from playing. When choosing your music consider your personal taste, the theme of your ceremony (traditional or modern, religious or civil,), your budget, and any restrictions imposed by the location. A sound system will need to be available for some musicians who do not have their own. Sometimes the location has one available or a sound system could be rented. Some places to look for musicians are: college music departments, music stores, word of mouth (ask friends and co-workers who they know), and churches. |
